What is a powered (or active) speaker?

Speakers can be divided into two types - passive and active (or powered). Passive speakers are your 'typical' speaker – an enclosure with speaker components only, that you need to connect to a separate amplifier or receiver. Active, or powered, speakers embed the amplifier within the speaker enclosure. Vanatoo speakers have both a passive and an active speaker and incorporate a single 2 channel amplifier to power both. This design is more energy efficient and requires only one power cord, so we felt it was better for home environments than the single channel design, which places separate amplifiers in each speaker, and is a common configuration for studio monitors.
